On Monday, in a report published by the Somali Union of Journalists denounced, the death of several journalists at the hands of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, as a means to eliminate press freedom.

The report highlights the concerns shared by journalists about the challenges they face in fulfilling their duty. These include severe repression and threats, among other challenges that hinder the fulfilment of their mandate by journalists.

“The threats and challenges facing journalists have paralyzed the media operating environment in Somalia over the past year,” the report says.

“It documents numerous serious violations, including arrests, detentions, torture and even the murder of a journalist, thus painting a grim picture of the country’s media freedom.”

In the report that recorded attacks on journalists in 2023, 60% of the attacks occurred with short-term arrests and detentions, They are often used as a scare tactic to suppress critical information.

“Prolonged detention accounted for 17 per cent of the attacks, raising serious concerns about due process and conditions in detention. Equally alarming were the cases of torture, which also account for 17 per cent of cases, highlighting the serious physical risks faced by journalists.”

The country’s capital, Mogadishu, is the most dangerous place for journalists. ” This is where 40 percent of the attacks occur,” the report says.
