For the Russian leader, however, the implementation of a 30-day ceasefire presupposes greater guarantees.

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke positively about the talks between White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We had very good and productive discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday, and there is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end,” he said.

“But, at this very moment, thousands of Ukrainian troops are completely surrounded by the Russian military and in a very bad and vulnerable position,” Trump revealed.

“I have strongly requested President Putin to spare their lives. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!!!” he added.

During the meeting at the Kremlin on Thursday night, Witkoff and Putin discussed the offer of a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine, which was agreed upon this week in Saudi Arabia between Washington and Kyiv.

The Russian leader assured that he was in favor of a truce but warned that its implementation and verification presented some challenges. Therefore, he considered it desirable to speak directly by phone with the U.S. president.

Before the meeting, Putin had warned that the implementation of a ceasefire depended on the establishment of measures such as “a halt to aid and intelligence-sharing, as well as forcing Ukraine not to train, reinforce, or resupply its forces during the ceasefire,” the New York Post reported.

The introduction of these safeguards, however, appears to be viewed by Western analysts as a subtle symbolic reaffirmation of the impossibility of Ukraine’s victory in its war against Russia.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, a Kremlin-style agreement “would reinforce Putin’s belief that Russia can militarily defeat Ukraine, and would incentivize Putin to resume military operations against Ukraine rather than making any concessions in formal negotiations to end the war.”
