Tanzania: Remarkable Progress in Health, WHO

According to the report, Tanzania made significant strides in increasing vaccination coverage from less than 2.8 percent in 2021 to 53.8 percent in 2023 by leveraging WHO-supported initiatives.

On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) praised Tanzania for making remarkable progress in its health status.

In its WHO Tanzania 2022-2023 Biennial Report released Thursday, the UN health agency said a healthy population is necessary for the prosperity of the Tanzanian economy.

The 62-page report catalogs several achievements in Tanzania’s health sector, including a substantial reduction in maternal mortality rates. It notes that pregnancy-related deaths fell sharply from 556 per 100,000 live births in 2015 to 104 in 2022.

According to the report, Tanzania made significant strides in increasing vaccination coverage from less than 2.8 percent in 2021 to 53.8 percent in 2023 by leveraging WHO-supported initiatives.

The report notes that Tanzania’s rapid and coordinated response to the Marburg virus outbreak in 2023, in cooperation with WHO, successfully contained the outbreak, protected communities, and prevented further spread.

Another remarkable achievement was Tanzania’s parliament’s adoption of the Universal Health Insurance Bill, facilitated by technical guidance and reviews from the WHO and partners.

“Our commitment to the people of Tanzania remains unwavering. Together with our partners, we will continue to innovate, advocate, and strive toward achieving better health outcomes for all in the next biennial and beyond,” said Charles Sagoe-Moses, the WHO Tanzania country representative.
