The auditorium of the Journalists’ Union of São Paulo was the venue this Monday (11) for the event titled “Venezuela: the media and the role of Telesur,” where Patricia Villegas, president of the multiplatform news outlet Telesur, shared her analysis of the communication landscape in Latin America.

During her speech, Villegas emphasized that the current context in Latin America is ideal for addressing counter-hegemonic communication and producing content from the global south.

“Telesur offers a unique perspective on Latin America, amid what I consider a dictatorship of algorithms,” Villegas stated. The president of Telesur highlighted that the challenges faced by her platform are common to other alternative media in the region, regardless of their size or focus.

Villegas stressed the urgent need to establish independent platforms that facilitate the dissemination of alternative information. “Our content, produced in Venezuela and of high quality, is silenced by existing platforms and does not receive adequate distribution,” she lamented.

Villegas also proposed creating a technical-scientific alliance among southern countries to develop new platforms that would allow popular media to compete with large communication networks.

“It is essential to make a significant effort to keep our media on the streets, reporting from the people and approaching a popular agenda. Only we can tell certain stories, and that is our differentiation,” she analyzed.

The president of teleSUR concluded her remarks by highlighting the importance of uniting forces among popular media to effectively contest communication hegemony in Latin America.

“It is crucial to support and trust in the information produced by alternative media. We face an unequal battle: we have less technology and financial resources. Our only option is to keep fighting,” she finished.
