Thailand Detains a Person in Connection With Collapsed Building Due to Earthquake

The Thai police arrested on Saturday one of the alleged managers of the construction company who worked in the building that collapsed in Bangkok on 28 March following an earthquake in Burma.

The detainee is a Chinese national and authorities suspect him of violating the foreign investment law, the Special Investigations Department of the Thai Police said at a press conference.
The officers further indicated that they have three other arrest warrants for suspects, these being of Thai nationality, while according to the authorities, The four are suspected of acting as a front man for the Chinese state-building firm China Railway to evade Thai laws and operate in the country.
Investigations continue on other companies involved in the project, including a Chinese steel company based in Thailand that supplied the steel, which according to the surveys would be of a lower quality than necessary, for construction.
The collapse of the future headquarters of the State Audit Office in northern Bangkok occurred following the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on 28 March in Burma, despite the fact that the epicenter of the earthquake was located more than 1,000 kilometres away from the Thai capital, the telluric movement shook the high buildings of the metropolis.
The collapse of the building on more than 30 floors, the only one recorded in Bangkok by the earthquake, trapped some 100 workers, of whom 47 bodies have been recovered to date.
According to Thai authorities, the remains of a similar number are still in the rubble more than three weeks after the accident.
In Burma, the strong quake left more than 3,700 dead, according to figures provided by the military junta.
