Thailand to Join BRICS as an Associate State

On January 1, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will also join the group.
Starting January 1, 2025, Thailand will join as an associate state in the group of emerging economies led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this step follows growing cooperation with the group since 2017 and represents a commitment to multilateralism, particularly among emerging nations.
“This association offers significant opportunities to strengthen ties with BRICS member states, emerging markets, and developing countries with high growth potential,” the Ministry specified, adding that Thailand will continue working with the bloc under Brazil’s presidency next year.
At the October summit in the Russian city of Kazan, the Russian government acknowledged there were differences regarding the bloc’s expansion. However, the final communiqué approved the status of associate state to alleviate discontent among candidate countries.
A leaked list even included the countries expected to join this category: Turkey, Indonesia, Nigeria, Algeria, Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and Uganda.
On January 1, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will also join the group.
