Death Toll From Explosion In Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran Rises To 40

At least 40 people have died and another 800 have been injured in the large explosion that shook the Iranian port of Shahid Rajai, in the southern city of Bandar Abbas, the day before.

“So far, 40 people have died from injuries caused by the explosion,” announced this Sunday the governor of Hormozgan province, Mohammad Ashuri, according to IRNA.

The country’s authorities estimate that more than 800 people were injured in the incident, although most have been discharged from medical centers or received outpatient treatment at the site of the explosion.

The head of the Iranian Red Crescent, Mohammad Javad Kulivand, reported hours earlier that 190 of the injured remain hospitalized, of whom 20 are in intensive care.

Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian ordered last night to investigate the causes of the incident that are still unknown, and to observe the situation on the ground today he traveled to Bandar Abbas, where he visited the hospitalized wounded and the damaged port.

Iran has declared a national day of mourning following an explosion at the port of Shahid Rajai in Bandar Abbas, which caused at least 28 deaths and 800 injuries.

The Iranian government expressed its condolences to the families of the victims, while the province of Hormozgan, where the country’s key trading port is located, announced three days of mourning.

An explosion shook the port of Shahid Rajai after containers with suspected chemical material were set on fire. Firefighters have been working to put out the flames, which persist but are 80% under control, according to Iranian government sources.
