The European Parliament Sees Danger in the U.S. Negotiating With Russia

MEPs stated that the U.S. initiative ultimately serves to ’empower’ Russia.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament lamented the attempts to “blackmail” Ukraine into surrendering to Russia and considered it “counterproductive and dangerous” for the United States to have attempted to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia while excluding Ukraine and other European countries.

In a non-binding resolution that passed with 442 votes in favor, 98 against, and 126 abstentions, the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) stated that this initiative ultimately serves to “empower” Russia.
“Given Russia’s track record of violating previous agreements and fundamental principles of international law, peace can only be achieved from a position of strength, particularly through effective security guarantees,” the European Parliament stated.
The resolution repeatedly warns of growing concerns over Washington’s shift in stance on the conflict following Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House, “which has included openly blaming Ukraine for the war, suspending military aid, and attempting to coerce Ukraine.”
For the European Parliament, recent developments should serve as the “final wake-up call” for the European Union to position itself as Ukraine’s main partner and actively work to maintain the broadest possible international support for Kyiv.
The European Parliament welcomed the latest developments in Saudi Arabia, where the U.S. and Ukraine reached an agreement on a ceasefire and Washington committed to resuming arms supplies and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv. However, the European Parliament warned that a ceasefire is only an effective tool for suspending hostilities “if the aggressor respects it.”
At the same time, the text urges EU member states to “substantially increase and accelerate their military support, particularly in terms of supplying weapons and ammunition, as well as training, in response to Ukraine’s pressing needs” in order to reach a point where their military support for the country amounts to “at least 0.25% of their annual GDP.”
Overall, MEPs warned that the outcome of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the stance taken by the international community will “crucially influence the future actions of other authoritarian regimes that are closely observing the course of the war and assessing their own opportunities to pursue aggressive foreign policies.”
