Munir al-Barsh, the general director of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, has described the situation in the northern part of the Strip as a “hell,” following 100 days of ground offensive and constant siege by Israel.

In statements made on Sunday, Al-Barsh emphasized that hospitals in the enclave have become “mass graves,” reflecting the devastation and suffering faced by the population.
Since the beginning of the Israeli offensive in early October 2024, it is estimated that around 5,000 people have died or gone missing, while more than 9,500 have been injured.
Additionally, Israeli forces have kidnapped approximately 2,300 people, including 65 medical staff members. Al-Barsh denounced daily attacks and the prohibition imposed by the Israeli army on delivering food to medical personnel trapped in hospitals in the north.
An emblematic case of the devastating impact on healthcare infrastructure is Al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia, which has been under siege for 100 days. Despite being declared out of service by the Gaza government on December 24, the center still houses more than 30 patients who continue to receive treatment.
The United Nations Office has also documented assaults on medical facilities, noting that the first major operation by the Israeli army against a hospital occurred at Al Shifa Medical Complex in November 2023. Subsequently, in March 2024, the facilities were raided again and were completely destroyed by April.
During the Israeli army’s withdrawal from the hospital, three mass graves were found containing at least 80 bodies; some were reported to still have catheters and tubes attached, suggesting they were patients.
Al-Barsh harshly criticized the “shameful” silence of the international community regarding what he describes as atrocities committed by Israel, stating that this silence has further deepened the suffering of innocent civilians.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate rapidly, with limited access to medical care and basic resources. The international community faces increasing calls to act and address this unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
