The transfer of the coffin began at the conclusion of the funeral in Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican, which was attended by around 250,000 faithful and delegations from more than 140 countries and international organizations.
The coffin was placed on a white, open-top popemobile that had been modified with a platform. The procession will travel along a six-kilometer route through the center of the Italian capital, passing landmarks such as the Imperial Forums, the Colosseum, and Piazza Venezia.
As it moved through the city, thousands of people gathered in the streets to bid him a final farewell. The procession will conclude at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where Francis chose to have his tomb located, instead of in the Vatican crypt.
