The Rainy Season in South Asia Leaves 174 Dead So Far

The monsoon rains severely affect people and cause loss of infrastructure and livestock.
Every year, South Asia experiences intense rains that cause significant personal and material damage, especially during the monsoon season between May and September. In recent weeks, floods and landslides have caused at least 174 deaths in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

On Tuesday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that six people died over the last 24 hours in the state of Assam, in northeastern India. This brings the number of deaths to 85.
The heavy rains have also caused the loss of livestock and wild animals, including six rhinoceroses, according to data from Kaziranga National Park. They have also forced nearly 50,000 people to seek refuge in government camps and have affected 1.8 million people in the state of Assam.
The rainfall has caused the death of 75 people in just over a month, according to the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Portal. Twenty-five of them died in the last week, while seven people remain missing.
Since the monsoon rains began on June 10, Nepalese authorities have also recorded 81 people injured. Floods and landslides might affect 1.81 million people during the four-month rainy season.
Bangladesh has also experienced heavy rains and floods in recent weeks, especially in regions neighboring the Indian state of Assam. Since June 1, authorities have recorded eight deaths due to the heavy rains and their consequences.
On Tuesday, the Bangladeshi Ministry of Disaster Management stated that nearly 1.9 million people have been affected by the floods in 12 districts.
Currently, the waters of nine rivers are above the level considered safe. However, it is expected that the floods in the northeast of the country will decrease in the next 48 hours.
