Israeli Defense Minister Gallant again suggested that his troops were preparing for a ground incursion into Lebanon.

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the risk of a major war breaking out in the Middle East is very high following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

During his daily press briefing, Peskov said that Israeli bombings of residential areas in Lebanon are causing a huge number of casualties. “This will inevitably lead to a humanitarian catastrophe like the one we are seeing in Gaza. These consequences cannot leave us indifferent, they cause our deep concern,” he said.

On Saturday, Russia strongly condemned the assassination of Nasrallah and warned that it will have “even greater dramatic consequences for Lebanon and the entire Middle East.” According to Moscow, Israel was aware of this danger, but still decided to act and “kill Lebanese citizens, which will almost inevitably provoke a new wave of violence.”

The Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry stressed that “all responsibility for the further escalation” will fall exclusively on Israel, which it urged to immediately cease hostilities.

On Monday, however, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant again suggested that his troops were preparing for a ground incursion into Lebanon amid escalating attacks against Hezbollah.

“We will use all of our capabilities. If anyone on the other side doesn’t understand what these capabilities mean, they are all of them, and you are part of this effort,” he told troops from two brigades stationed on Israel’s northern border.

Last week, Gallant warned Israeli soldiers to be ready for the moment when the order to enter Lebanon might come, and Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said airstrikes on the neighboring country were serving to prepare the ground for a possible incursion.
