The situation of Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza is critical, with hundreds of recent deaths and more than 60,000 new displaced people, many homeless to return to.

Efforts to provide essential humanitarian aid, such as food and medicine, have been hampered by the Israeli authorities, putting many lives at risk, according to statements by António Guterres’ spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

“The secretary-general is shocked by the horrific levels of death, injuries, and destruction in the north of Gaza, with civilians trapped in rubble and the injured and sick not receiving lifesaving treatment, families without food or shelter, along with separated families and many people detained,” Dujarric said.

The spokesperson also stressed that this halt in humanitarian aid has postponed the last phase of the polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza which may affect thousands of children.

Northern Gaza, specifically Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, has been facing an unprecedented military siege since October 4, with over 800 people dead and the healthcare system overwhelmed after repeated attacks and raids by Israeli forces, who want the remaining population to move to Gaza City.
