‘The United Nations must decide what it wants to be: either a forum for justice or an instrument of power,” FM Gil stated.
On Monday, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil participated in the 58th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

During his speech, the Bolivarian diplomat emphasized that Venezuelan democracy is not an empty concept but rather a daily practice and a weapon in the hands of the Venezuelan people. Gil harshly denounced the United Nations’ complicity in media manipulation campaigns aimed at distorting the reality of Venezuela.
“The UN must decide what it wants to be: either a forum for justice or an instrument of power. The multilateral system has been hijacked by bureaucrats who have turned human rights into a business and a tool for political blackmail,” the Venezuelan Foreign Minister said.
Addressing the participants at the Human Rights Council, Gil described the resurgence of fascism as “the greatest danger facing humanity” and asserted that his country aims to be one of the main strongholds in the fight against it.
“We have decided that Caracas will be the world capital of the fight against fascism. We will not remain silent while the world regresses to the darkest periods of history,” he stressed.
“Venezuela is the most stable country in the region, while in others, fascism disguises itself as democracy to impose chaos,” Gil added while recalling that his country’s economy has achieved high growth rates despite the U.S. blockade.
The Venezuelan diplomat also pointed out that the government of President Joe Biden and the European Union promoted a structure of economic and financial aggression against Venezuela.
“How many USAID funds have ended up in the private accounts of corrupt individuals while this Council accuses us with fabricated reports?” Gil emphasized, even suggesting the possibility that one of the beneficiaries of this U.S. aid may have been the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela.
“Venezuela has no doubt that the Fact-Finding Mission is simply a mechanism to capture money from USAID and other agencies,” he said, referring to the commission of experts approved by the Human Rights Council in 2019 and renewed in 2024 for another two years.
The Bolivarian diplomat also demanded that the multilateral system recognize the looting of assets belonging to the Venezuelan people through U.S.-EU sanctions.
“Who is accountable for the blatant dispossession of our company CITGO in the U.S.? Where are the billions of dollars stolen by your so-called allies in Venezuela?” he said, referring to CITGO Petroleum Corporation, which was subjected to U.S. sanctions.
“To those who have bet on our disappearance, I ask you to take note: You have failed,” the Venezuelan Foreign Minister concluded.
