The Nicaraguan capital, Managua, has become the epicenter of the XVII China-Latin America and Caribbean Business Summit, which began this Monday with the participation of 250 Chinese entrepreneurs and 70 delegates from various Latin American nations.

Under the theme “Joining Forces, Creating Opportunities: New Horizons for China, Latin America, and the Caribbean,” the summit was inaugurated by Laureano Ortega Murillo, advisor to the Presidency on investment, trade, and international cooperation, who represented his parents, President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo.

In his inaugural speech, Ortega Murillo expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Communist Party of China, and the Chinese people for choosing Nicaragua as the venue for this significant event.

This two-day event is taking place at the Olof Palme Convention Center and brings together business leaders, government officials, and representatives from international organizations with the aim of strengthening economic and trade relations between China and the region.

Organized by the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Trade and Investment and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, this summit has established itself as a key forum for knowledge exchange and the establishment of strategic alliances.

During the summit, opportunities will be explored to promote joint development and inclusive growth through specialized exhibitions and discussion panels addressing crucial topics such as investment, commercial logistics, and cooperation.

The summit is chaired by Yang Zhen, Vice President of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Ren Hongbin, President of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Trade and Investment; and Ovidi Reyes, President of the Central Bank of Nicaragua.

It is noteworthy that on December 20, 2023, President Ortega described the agreement reached between China and Nicaragua to elevate their diplomatic relations to a “strategic partnership” as “the best Christmas gift.” This decision was formalized after a phone conversation between Ortega and Xi Jinping.

Diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua were initially established in December 1985 during the first Sandinista government. However, they were interrupted in 1990 when the government of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro chose to strengthen ties with Taiwan. Finally, on December 10, 2021, Nicaragua resumed diplomatic relations with China after breaking ties with Taipei.
