“Now we are the only country in the world where the people will also elect their judges, magistrates, and justices of the Supreme Court of Justice. If democracy is the power of the people, that means we will be the world’s most democratic country because we will elect all three branches of government,” she said.

According to the National Electoral Institute (INE), 3,422 people will be eligible in this process. In total, 881 federal positions will be chosen in the election, in which more than 100 million citizens are called to vote. Sheinbaum stated that this eleccions is “very profound.”

“The Executive Branch rests in the president, the governors, and the municipal presidents. And who elects them? The people. The Legislative Branch, those who make the laws, consists of senators and representatives—both federal and local. And who elects them? The people,” she recalled.

“And the third branch, the Judicial Branch? Which is responsible for justice. Until now, it was chosen by the Senate or by the justices, and they internally selected judges and magistrates,” Sheinbaum added.

The campaign for the election of judicial officials will run until May 28. Candidates will not receive public funding and may use their own funds, with a spending cap ranging from approximately US$11,000 for lower court candidates to US$70,000 for Supreme Court candidates.

On Saturday, the INE prohibited the federal, state, or municipal governments, as well as any public institution, public official, or religious leader, from promoting citizen participation in the election.
