The heavy rains that have hit Haiti in the last 72 hours have left a tragic toll of 13 dead, 15 wounded, and one missing, as well as the destruction of 501 houses and the flooding of more than 16,500 homes.
This alarming situation was reported by the National Disaster and Risk Management System in a partial report released on Tuesday.
The moderate to heavy rainfall was the result of a cold front that has persisted in the northern part of the country, particularly affecting the departments of Nord-Ouest, Grand’Anse, Nippes, and Nord.
The situation has led to river overflows in the Northwest department, causing severe flooding and significant damage to road infrastructure. According to the agency, several sections of national, departmental, and communal roads have been affected.
Port de Paix, one of the worst-affected localities, has recorded at least 11 deaths, while two additional deaths have been confirmed in Jérémie, located in Grand’Anse. Local authorities have reported considerable damage to housing in these areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
In addition to the loss of life and property, the situation has generated health concerns due to stagnant water in several communities. Health problems have been reported particularly in the third and second communal sections of Port-de-Paix.
The report also warns of a resurgence of vector-borne and waterborne diseases in Grand’Anse, which has experienced persistent rainfall for the past two months.
Authorities urge the population to remain alert and follow safety recommendations while damage assessments are carried out and humanitarian aid efforts for those affected by this natural disaster are coordinated.
