In a tragic and alarming development, the Media Bureau of the Palestinian Government has reported that more than 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza during 2024 at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces.
This grim toll is compounded by the recent attack on Thursday, where five reporters from Al-Quds News were killed in an Israeli bombing while they were in a clearly identified van outside Al-Awda Hospital in central Gaza.
The journalists killed have been identified as Faisal Abu al-Qumsan, Ibrahim al-Sheij Ali, Muhammad al-Ladah, Fadi Hassouni, and Ayman Al-Hadi. The latter was in the hospital waiting for his first child to be born when he decided to join his colleagues abroad; it was at this point that the assault occurred.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Union has condemned this attack, calling it a serious violation of international and humanitarian law, as well as a war crime that adds to the series of attacks perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip.
In an attempt to justify the attack, the Israeli authorities have alleged that the journalists were linked to the Palestinian resistance, a claim that has been rejected by various human rights organizations.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has filed multiple complaints with the International Criminal Court, accusing the Israeli army of committing “war crimes against journalists.” The organization points out that since October 2023, more than 200 journalists have lost their lives in Gaza, with at least 35 of them killed while carrying out their work, which RSF describes as an “unprecedented massacre.”
This context highlights the growing concern for the safety of journalists in conflict zones and the urgent need to protect the right to information and freedom of the press amid violence and repression.
