At least six people have been killed, 17 remain missing, and 25 are injured in the tragic crash of a passenger bus that fell into a river in a mountainous area in northern Peru.
The news was confirmed this Friday by official sources, who detailed the devastating effects of this incident.
The accident occurred on Friday morning at kilometer 120 of the Longitudinal Road of Conchucos, in the district of Lucma, located in the mountains of the region of Áncash.
According to information provided by the state agency Andina, the bus, owned by the company Conchucos Express, plunged down a chasm into the Pacosbamba River.
This river had increased its flow due to heavy rains that have hit the area in recent days, which probably contributed to its current dragging people into the water.
The bus was covering the route from Lima to the town of Pomabamba, where it was expected to arrive at 8:00 local time (13:00 GMT).
However, fate turned to tragedy when the accident alert was issued. Due to the difficult accessibility of the area, ambulances were mobilized from various health centers to transfer the most seriously injured to the Hospital of Pomabamba.
Ricardo Natividad, regional director of Áncash Health, told Andina that every effort is being made to provide care and assistance to those affected by this tragic event. The situation remains critical, with a significant number of people still missing.
The Superintendence for Land Transport of Persons, Cargo and Goods (Sutran) has reported that the bus had the necessary accident insurance and technical certification, and that both drivers held current licenses.
Despite these measures, the tragedy highlights the vulnerability of transport in mountainous areas, especially under adverse weather conditions.
The community and local authorities are on alert as rescue efforts continue to search for missing persons.
This unfortunate accident is a reminder of the importance of maintaining safety standards in public transport and the need to be prepared for inclement weather in vulnerable regions.
