Train Crash Causes Oil Spill in Sancti Spiritus, Central Cuba

Two Cuban trains loaded with oil collided on Saturday in a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, in the center of the island, causing the spill of crude, but without causing deaths, according to local authorities.

“Of the 26 passengers travelling on one of the two trains, all carrying Cuban crude oil, one overturned and a spill occurred.” said the news website Cubadebate while local authorities say that the dumping of this paila was contained and worked together with the company Cuba Petroleos (Cupet) to recover all the fuel possible, and then “to undertake environmental actions at the site where this collision occurred.”

Cubadebate specified that the accident occurred at 7:30 am today, December 7, 2024, at kilometer 349.0 of the Central Railway Line, between the stations Guayos and Siguaney, in the province of Sancti Spíritus,” when the Extra Train 67 was struck, with locomotive 52538 and a formation of 26 loaded wagons, against Extra Train No.912, with locomotive 38266 and a formation of 11 loaded wagons.

Press media and local authorities remarked that nobody were injured or killed due the accident, and there are no major impacts to the road infrastructure, although the effects on one of the two locomotives are appreciable.

The Ministry of Transport blamed the crash on “non-compliance with railway operating rules” and said that as established by the established procedure, An investigative commission was set up to investigate the causes and conditions of the derailment.
