Rowley announced his decision of quit on January 6 at the close of the government’s parliamentary retreat at the Magdalena Grand Beach and Golf Resort, Lowlands, Tobago.
This announcement came in the context of Prime Minister Rowley’s announcement that he would retire before the end of the parliamentary term in August and not run for re-election for his seat in Diego Martin West.
Stuart Young is a lawyer and current Minister of Energy, in addition to holding a ministerial position in the Prime Minister’s Office and having previously served in the Attorney General’s Office and Legal Affairs.
Member of Parliament for Port of Spain North/St Ann’s West since 2015 and has served as prime minister and attorney general on several occasions.
Rowley criticized the opposition for attacking Young’s appointment and “stoking racial hatred”. He stated that the PNM represents all colors, races and classes, and that the opposition has failed to create discord. He ridiculed his comments on “red” as pre-election nonsense, having nothing substantial to say.
Keith Rowley urged the PNM to prioritize winning the upcoming general election, stating that everything else is secondary. Addressing the general council and delegates, Rowley emphasized the importance of remaining in power after ten years, recalling the difficulty of returning to government from opposition, citing Patrick Manning.
