‘We have begun to step back from the edge of the abyss,’ the Russian diplomat stated.
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted that U.S. President Donald Trump admitted that the interest in incorporating Ukraine into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was one of the factors that led to the ongoing armed conflict.

“So far, Trump is the first and only Western leader who has loudly and clearly stated that the situation in Ukraine is a result of the previous U.S. administration’s stance on Ukraine’s NATO membership,” he said, pointing out that NATO membership is an existential threat to Moscow.
He also emphasized that Russia and the U.S. have begun a process to prevent further distancing following negotiations held in the Saudi city of Riyadh, which took place in a positive atmosphere and with ‘the right intentions.’
“We have begun to step back from the edge of the abyss to which Joe Biden’s administration had pushed our relations,” Lavrov said during his speech in the Lower House (Duma).
“We will see how the situation develops moving forward and what steps will be taken,” he added, warning that “there will always be problems, but the important thing is to meet, listen, and hear each other.”
The Russian diplomat also stated that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed in Riyadh that “when there are divergences of interest, responsible countries, including, of course, Russia and the U.S., must not allow these divergences to lead to confrontation, let alone a confrontation that would be disastrous for many other countries.”
On Wednesday, Lavrov also referred to the rise of neo-Nazism in Ukraine, some European countries, and Canada, where he claimed a “diaspora of millions of Hitler’s collaborators” has settled.
“We will remain constantly attentive to uniting international efforts to counter any manifestation of neo-Nazism, Russophobia, and other forms of racial and religious intolerance,” the Russian diplomat stressed.
