The United States will keep 50% of all revenues obtained from the extraction of Ukrainian natural resources.

On Friday, presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky will sign an agreement at the White House under which Ukraine will share its natural resources with the United States.

“President Zelensky is coming on Friday, it’s already confirmed. We will sign an agreement that will be an agreement,” Trump declared this Wednesday at the start of the first cabinet meeting of his new term.

Zelensky confirmed that his country has agreed with Washington on the final form of an initial agreement to create a joint investment fund, to which Ukraine will contribute profits from the future exploitation of its natural resources.

The Ukrainian president continues to aspire for future commitments to include a written pledge from the United States to continue providing military and security support to Ukraine.

According to the agreement’s final version published by Kyiv Independent, “Ukraine will contribute to the fund—managed by both parties but with majority ownership by the U.S.—with 50% of all revenues obtained from the future monetization” of all the country’s natural resources. This includes mineral deposits, hydrocarbons, oil, natural gas, and other extractable materials.

Trump had demanded access to Ukraine’s minerals as repayment for the money the United States has allocated to help the country defend itself against the Russian invasion that began in 2022. Zelensky was initially reluctant to accept those terms but also acknowledged that he needed to sign the proposal to continue receiving security support from Washington.

In recent weeks, Trump has taken steps toward rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has strongly criticized Zelensky, whom he described as a “dictator,” as part of his strategy to end the war in Ukraine.
