U.S. president-elect Donald Trump confirmed this Sunday that he will grant TikTok an extension to operate in the country and announced that he would like U.S. companies to have a 50% stake in the ByteDance-owned platform to keep it “in good hands.”

On his social media platform, Truth Social, he urged U.S. companies not to allow TikTok to “remain in the dark.”

TikTok ceased operations this Saturday in the United States after the Supreme Court upheld a law passed last year by Congress that required the platform to sever ties with its parent company, China’s ByteDance, or face closure.

TikTok’s decision was made about an hour and a half before the law was set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Eastern Time.

According to the Joe Biden administration, TikTok took this step on its own initiative, because after the Supreme Court ruling, the White House announced that the current administration would not enforce the regulation, and compliance would fall to the new Trump administration, which will take office on Monday.

Trump noted that his executive order would extend the agreed deadline for TikTok so that an agreement can be reached to protect national security.

“The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped to prevent TikTok from disappearing before my order,” said the president-elect, who believes that Americans deserve to see his “exciting” inauguration.

Trump considered that if the United States obtains a 50% stake in the joint venture, TikTok is saved and allowed to thrive.
