During a statement to the media at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, the Republican politician highlighted the importance of Ukraine holding democratic elections and reminded that that European country is under martial law.

“We have a situation where there have been no elections in Ukraine,” he said, suggesting that the Ukrainian people should have the opportunity to express themselves at the ballot box.

“When they want to sit at the negotiating table, shouldn’t the people of Ukraine say that it has been a long time since they had elections?” Trump questioned, emphasizing that holding elections in Ukraine is not a demand from Russia but rather a proposal of his and many other countries.

Additionally, the U.S. president criticized Zelensky’s administration for failing to reach an agreement to end the conflict over the past three years.

“I’ve heard, ‘Oh, we haven’t been invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years, you should have finished it… You should have never started it. You could have reached a deal,” Trump told the Ukrainians, referring to the war with Russia.

The U.S. president also expressed openness to the possibility of European troops being deployed in Ukraine as a security guarantee once a peace agreement is reached.

“Having troops on the ground would be fine, I wouldn’t object to that at all,” he said, referring to a proposal discussed among European Union countries and the United Kingdom, though opinions remain divided on its feasibility.

For his part, Zelensky responded to Trump’s statements, accusing him of being “trapped in a bubble of misinformation” and reproaching him for helping Russian President Vladimir Putin break out of international isolation.

Previously, U.S.-Russia negotiations held in Saudi Arabia concluded successfully, as both parties committed to advancing a constructive dialogue. Although numerous disagreements persist, the meeting marked an important step toward reducing tensions, seeking peaceful solutions to the Ukrainian conflict, and promoting global geopolitical stability.

Both countries expressed their commitment to restoring rationality in their relations and avoiding any escalation that could lead to a nuclear conflict, thus prioritizing global stability and mutual security.
