On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, who reached an agreement and decided to pause the 25% tariffs on Mexico for one month.

“I always told him that we wanted him to put the tariffs on hold,” she said, referring to the protectionist measures that the U.S. leader announced on Saturday.
“He agreed. In the end, he asked me how long I wanted to pause them. At first, I told him, ‘Well, let’s pause them forever.’ Then I said, ‘Well, let’s pause them for a month.’ And I’m sure that within this month, we will be able to achieve good results for his people,” Sheinbaum added.
“Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl,” she said on social media after the call with Trump.
The Mexican president also stated that she had already spoken with Defense Minister Gen. Ricardo Trevilla to instruct him to immediately operationalize the reinforcement of the northern border. “Strengthening the northern border’s security also benefits us. So, I think it was a good deal,” Sheinbaum emphasized.
During her conversation with Trump, she also discussed the importance of addressing arms trafficking from the U.S. to illegal groups in Mexico. “It is alarming how many high-powered weapons enter Mexico from the United States. These high-powered weapons arrive illegally and arm criminal groups,” she said.
On Saturday, the White House announced that starting Tuesday, February 4, the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican products in retaliation for the trade deficit, irregular migration, and fentanyl trafficking. To justify this measure, the Trump administration argued that the cartels have an alliance with the Mexican government and endanger the U.S. national security and public health.
In response, Sheinbaum initially stated that Mexico would announce its “Plan B” with tariff and non-tariff measures on Monday. She also accused the White House of making “terribly irresponsible” accusations.
