“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director, said in a concise text.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations have said the former president was the target of “what appears to be an attempted assassination” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Police confirmed on Sunday that one person was arrested and an AK47 rifle with a peephole was found, presumably intended to attack the Republican candidate.
The suspect’s identity has not yet been officially made public, but both Fox News and the New York Post report that he has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh.
In a statement, the White House said US President Joe Biden and Democratic Vice President and candidate Kamala Harris were informed “of the incident” and say they are relieved to know he is safe. His team will keep them informed on a regular basis, the Chair said.
