The elected U.S. president, Donald Trump, stated this Saturday that he will “most likely” grant TikTok a 90-day extension to avoid its ban in the United States.

“I think that would be, without a doubt, an option to consider. The 90-day extension is something that will probably happen because it’s appropriate. We have to analyze it carefully. It’s a very important situation,” he said in a telephone interview with NBC News.

The U.S. Supreme Court greenlit a law on Friday that requires TikTok to suspend its operations in the country before January 19 for not severing ties with its parent company, the Chinese firm ByteDance.

Initially, it would be up to the outgoing president, Joe Biden, to take action that day to ensure the social network ceases operations for national security reasons, but the White House has decided to leave that responsibility to Trump, who will take office on January 20.

TikTok also announced on Friday that it continues with the idea of suspending its operations in the United States on January 19 despite the decision made.

The 90-day extension would give ByteDance time to sell the platform to a non-Chinese buyer, and that extension is explicitly permitted by a bipartisan law from last year under specific conditions.
