U.S. President Donald Trump today announced a two-week suspension of bombings against Iran, conditionally based on Tehran’s reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced past 7:35 PM on April 7 in his social network Truth Social , a significant two-week suspension of bombing operations against Iran.
This decision comes after direct contacts with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, both of whom had formally requested a halt to the ongoing offensive.
The U.S. President’s announcement marks a dramatic turn from his earlier confrontational stance. Just hours prior, Trump had issued a stern ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and threatening severe consequences if his deadline was not met. He had also warned that the United States possessed the capability to “level Iranian infrastructure in a single night”, a threat that triggered widespread alarm and prompted Iranian citizens to form human chains around strategic sites to protect them from potential attacks.
Consequently, the ultimatum previously issued to the Iranian Government, which was set to expire at 8 P.M. local time , has been effectively put into a virtual suspension. This unexpected pause signals a potential shift in the escalating tensions that have gripped the region in recent weeks, following sustained military aggression.
Bilateral Ceasefire Conditioned
The decision to temporarily halt the U.S. offensive is critically conditioned on Tehran’s acceptance of what Trump described as the “complete, immediate, and secure” opening of the Strait of Hormuz, as President Trump asserted.
President Trump clarified that the measure responds to two primary factors: the achievement of key military objectives and significant progress in ongoing negotiations with Iran. In a revealing statement, he disclosed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Tehran, which is now considered a viable foundation for reaching a comprehensive agreement.
“Almost all points of conflict have been agreed”, Trump affirmed, expressing optimism regarding the prospects for a lasting resolution. He added that this two-week timeframe is intended to allow for the finalization of a definitive understanding aimed at achieving long-term peace in the Middle East.
The prospect of an agreement, even a temporary one, represents a significant departure from the previous rhetoric of confrontation and potential “mass destruction” and marks an historic victory for Iran, forcing the end of the aggressions.
The fact that Iran reportedly provided a 10-point proposal to U.S. suggests that Tehran has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, despite facing direct military aggression and severe sanctions. This highlights Iran’s resilience and its commitment to defend peace and sovereignty of its territory.
The Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway, has been at the center of ongoing geopolitical disputes, particularly regarding Iran’s ability to control maritime traffic in the region. The condition highlights the United States’ continued focus on ensuring unimpeded global shipping lanes, especially for oil supplies, as a key factor in any de-escalation agreement.
In this sense, the next two weeks will be crucial in determining whether this temporary pause can evolve into a more stable and equitable resolution for the region.
