“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA agreement. This agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for President Sheinbaum,” he said.
“Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard together on the border, both in terms of stopping illegal aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!” Trump added.
On Tuesday, March 4, the U.S. president imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, the country’s two main trading partners.
However, one day later, the White House announced a one-month pause on tariffs for automobiles and parts manufactured in Mexico and Canada after Trump spoke with General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, the three largest U.S. automakers that assemble vehicles in both neighboring countries.
On Thursday morning, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick had already hinted at the possibility of suspending the tariffs for one month, not only for Mexico but also for Canada. However, regarding the latter, U.S. authorities have yet to make an official announcement.
