His remarks are in response to the protests that erupted in 2024 on university campuses against the genocide in Gaza.
On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to cut federal funding to any school or university that allows “illegal” protests.

“All Federal Funding will stop for any college, school, or university that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came,” announced on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested. No masks! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.
Trump’s remarks are in response to the protests that erupted in April 2024 on university campuses across the U.S. against the genocide in Gaza and Washington’s support for Israel. These demonstrations lasted for about three months and resulted in the arrest of approximately 3,100 people.
At the end of January, Trump signed an executive order in which he promised tough measures against the pro-Palestinian movement, which he described as “pro-jihadist.”
These measures included identifying foreign students who participated in the protests for deportation and revoking the visas of those he deemed “Hamas sympathizers.”
Many of the students who took part in the protests have denied supporting Hamas or engaging in antisemitic acts, stating that their goal was to protest against the genocide in Gaza, where Israeli occupation forces have killed over 47,000 Palestinians.
At the end of February, as a result of the executive order signed by Trump, the Department of Justice announced that a task force would visit ten U.S. universities, including Columbia and Harvard, to gather information on the protests and assess possible punishments.
