On Monday, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump stated that the governments of Mexico and Canada are “on notice” about the economic problems their migrants cause the United States.

This threatening statement was accompanied by a repetition of the false claim that many foreigners arriving in the U.S. are coming from Latin American prisons.

“We cannot let these people enter our country, and they understand, they are very well aware,” he said during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, his residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

The far-right politician, who will begin his second term in January, said he discussed this issue with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“They will have to stop this from happening. We lose a lot of money with Mexico. We lose a lot of money with Canada, an enormous amount,” Trump emphasized, while repeating misleading claims that Latin American nations send their prisoners to the United States.

However, human rights defenders have repeatedly pointed out that most migrants crossing the border are fleeing poverty, persecution, and violence in their home countries.

“We are subsidizing Canada. We are subsidizing Mexico… I get along very well with the people of Mexico and Canada, but we cannot allow this to happen. It is not fair. It is not right. And the people of Mexico and Canada understand that perfectly,” Trump declared.

The U.S. president-elect also stated that he would continue the construction of the border wall with Mexico, though he complained that it will cost “hundreds of millions” of dollars more than the first section built during his previous term (2017–2021).

“It’s a very expensive process, a very expensive wall,” he said, recalling that the first wall used steel and adding that the construction industry has since improved and much more can now be done with concrete. “We have very strong concrete and, in addition, reinforcing bars,” Trump said, as he also discussed his plan for mass deportations as a cornerstone of his immigration policy.
