Today’s meeting comes one day after Russian-U.S. consultations in Istanbul, which ended without any concrete agreement.
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, held a meeting to address the issue of a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that the meeting was a good opportunity “to convey to Witkoff the key elements of Russia’s position and the country’s main concerns.”
“Witkoff, as Trump’s special representative, will bring something to Putin from his president. He will listen, and the conversation will continue on various aspects of the settlement in Ukraine,” Peskov said.
“There should be no expectations of breakthroughs. There is an ongoing process of normalizing relations and an attempt to pave the way for launching a peace process around Ukraine. The parties are exchanging their positions,” he added.
This is Trump’s envoy’s third trip to Russia in the past two months. The previous visits took place on February 11 and March 13. Shortly before the meeting began, Trump called on Russia to take steps to end hostilities in Ukraine.
“Russia has to get moving. Too many people are DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war — A war that should have never happened, and wouldn’t have happened, if I were President!!!” Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social.
On April 16, Russia could withdraw from the energy truce, given that Ukrainian forces have repeatedly violated the moratorium by attacking Russian energy facilities. If a ceasefire is not reached by the end of the month, Trump may impose additional sanctions on Russia, either through executive power or by requesting that Congress approve new sanctions legislation.
Last week, Witkoff received Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, in Washington, in an effort to overcome the diplomatic stalemate. Today’s meeting comes one day after Russian-American consultations in Istanbul, which ended without any concrete agreement.
