In a move with international repercussions, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 10% tariff on goods from several Latin American countries, including Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina. This measure forms part of Washington’s promised tariff war, which Trump justifies as a response to these nations’ existing duties on American products.
The announcement comes at a delicate moment for Argentina, as President Javier Milei is currently in the United States seeking support amid negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a new loan.
Argentina’s economic situation has worsened following recent losses in its Treasury reserves, making Milei’s Washington visit particularly significant. His presence reflects a urgent effort to strengthen diplomatic ties during a critical period for his nation.
During his speech, Trump not only unveiled the new tariffs but also expressed optimism about America’s economic future, declaring this would mark “the beginning of a golden age” for the country. He asserted that the tariff war would generate millions in revenue and benefit domestic industries by opening foreign markets. The U.S. president framed the day as “one of the most important in [America’s] history.”
Trump also used the occasion to criticize previous administrations, accusing them of allowing the international community to take advantage of the United States and its allies.
Defending his policy, he cited examples like Canada’s high dairy tariffs, which he claims unfairly disadvantage U.S. farmers.
