His anti-democratic actions would be an example that could be followed in any country, the former Canadian MP warned.

On Tuesday, former Canadian MP Michael Ignatieff warned that if Donald Trump becomes president again, he would take measures that would further affect international trade.

The 77-year-old academic, who will receive the 2024 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences in Oviedo on Friday, shared this reflection regarding the November 5th election, in which Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the former Republican president are running.

Ignatieff recalled that Trump “refused to accept that he lost an election he had clearly lost” in 2020 and predicted that this will be a “closely contested” election.

“If he wins, he will likely take a series of steps that will further damage American democracy, and if that happens, he will set an example that could be followed in Spain, Canada, the United Kingdom, and any other country,” he warned.

Another consequence of a Republican victory could be the breaking of trade openness as a policy practice that has dominated for nearly a century in the United States.

Trump believes that his country “only benefits if it adds tariffs to European products or closes sectors of the economy where there is competitive threat,” Ignatieff added.

He also referred to Europe’s need for immigration in light of its declining population, saying that it must set “economic and social parameters” to determine the number of migrants it requires.

Ignatieff insisted that “illegal migration must be stopped” because “it creates groups of people who are within society but do not have full rights and are therefore subject to exploitation and abuse.”

“I want more migration, but legal migration, and less illegal migration, and that means having a policy with strict border control. If we have illegal immigrants in the country, they must be returned, and Europe is not doing this; that’s the problem,” he emphasized.
