“This morning, an armed man infiltrated the Supreme Court in a planned act to assassinate two brave judges with a long history of fighting against crimes against national security, espionage, and terrorism,” reported Mizan, the Iranian judiciary’s news agency.
The two senior judges who died in the shooting, which occurred at 10:45 local time (7:15 GMT) this morning, were identified as Mohammad Moghiseh, who headed the 53rd section of the court, and Ali Razini, chief of the 39th section.
Razini, 71, had already survived an assassination attempt in January 1998 when attackers planted a magnetic bomb on his vehicle, resulting in injuries.
Judiciary spokesman Asgahr Jahangir told state television that a Supreme Court security agent was injured in the attack.
Some media also reported that a third judge was injured, which was denied by Jahangir.
According to initial investigations, the attacker had not filed a complaint with the Supreme Court nor had he approached any of the judicial offices, although some media indicate that he was an employee of the court.
Authorities have initiated investigations to find other possible individuals involved in the attack.
The spokesman indicated that “over the past year, the judiciary has taken extensive measures to identify, pursue, arrest, and prosecute agents and elements affiliated with the despised Zionist regime (Israel),” implying that Israel was behind the armed attack.
