Two Palestinian Political Prisoners Arrested in Gaza Die in Israeli Prison

Two Palestinian prisoners, 35-year-old Muhamad Huwaishel Idris and 31-year-old Muath Jaled Rayyan, both detained in the Gaza Strip during the current war, have died in Israeli jails, institutions on Palestinian prisoners confirmed.

“The revelation of more martyrs among the detainees in Gaza has increased in recent weeks, which means that the occupation continues with systematic crimes of torture, medical neglect, starvation, rape and sexual assault, abuse and torture”, said a joint statement by the Palestinian Authority’s Commission on Prisoners’ Affairs, the Club of Palestinian Prisoners and Addameer, an association providing legal assistance to prisoners.
These institutions reported that the Israeli prison authorities reported the death of Idris in the Israeli prison of Ofer, in the occupied West Bank, Friday.
In addition, those institutions received a notification that Rayyan died on 2 November in response to a letter asking about his whereabouts, although it is still unknown which prison or detention centre he died in.
The causes and circumstances of their deaths are unknown. Idris’s family explained that he had no health problems after his “disappearance” on 25 August, while Rayyan was paralyzed before his arrest on 21 October.
Idris and Rayyan are the 46th and 47th Palestinian prisones who dead in Israeli prisons , many of them victims of torture, since 7 October 2023, when the war in Gaza began, according to data collected by Palestinian prisoner associations.
Although prisoners’ rights organisations fear that there are dozens of detainees in the enclave who have died at the disposal of the Israeli authorities, which have not yet reported their fate.
In this context, Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), and the Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights condemned the ongoing systematic abuse and medical negligence within Israeli prisons, highlighting the cruel and inhumane treatment prisoners face including torture, deprivation, and medical crimes, alongside various forms of physical and sexual abuse.
