The declining annexationism of imperialism will crash against the dignity and strength of the Global South, Arreaza said.

On Monday, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America–Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) stated that the annexationist aspirations of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump have no chance of succeeding.

In a message published on social media, ALBA-TCP Secretary Jorge Arreaza reminded that Latin American peoples have been resisting the imperialist ambitions of the United States for two centuries.

“201 years ago, the ruling elites in the U.S. launched the perverse and annexationist Monroe Doctrine. 200 years ago, Simon Bolivar convened the Congress of Panama to establish a unique treaty of Union, League, and Perpetual Confederation among our nations,” he said.

“Panama was then intended to be the center of that emerging power bloc. That dispute remains relevant today. The declining annexationism of imperialism in this new phase will crash against the dignity and strength of the united peoples of Our America and the entire Global South.”

With these words, Arreaza responded to statements made by Trump over the weekend, when the Republican politician threatened to achieve the “return” of the Panama Canal to the United States if the canal’s administrators do not reduce tolls for U.S. ships.

The United States built and managed the Panama Canal until its transfer to Panama on December 31, 1999, achieved under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977. Trump’s threats come as Panama recently commemorated, on December 20, the 35th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of the Central American country and as the 25th anniversary of the canal’s transfer approaches.

The position of the Republican leader “must be understood pragmatically, as Germany, France, and NATO have done,” since Trump “is negotiating in his own way,” said Panamanian economist Eddie Tapiero.

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino already stated that “the Panama Canal and its adjacent areas belong to Panama and will continue to do so” and emphasized that neither China, the European Union, the United States, nor any other power has “direct or indirect control” over it.
