Four years ago, his supporters interrupted the Congress session meant to certify the 2020 presidential election.

On Monday, the U.S. Congress will officially confirm Donald Trump as the winner of the 2024 presidential election, four years after his supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election result.

According to the election procedure, U.S. lawmakers will gather for a joint session of Congress to count the Electoral College votes cast in the election, which is the final step in certifying Republican President-elect Trump’s victory over his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.

The meeting falls on Jan. 6, the exact date when thousands of Trump’s supporters violently broke into the Capitol building four years ago, which interrupted the certifying process of the 2020 presidential election and prompted hundreds of lawmakers to evacuate in panic.

According to the latest data, over 1,500 “Make America Great Again” individuals have been charged with federal crimes over the riot that took place on January 6, 2021.

On that day, supporters of then-President Donald Trump, who traveled to Washington, D.C. from various locations across the country, rioted at and near the Capitol, seeking to disrupt the transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden.

In the 36 hours that the riots lasted, damages amounted to over US$2.7 million. Five people died and hundreds were injured, including 174 police officers. A bipartisan House select committee later determined that the incidents on January 5 and 6 were part of a seven-part plan to overturn the election.

Currently, many Americans have concerns about post-election violence. A Scripps News/Ipsos poll showes that more than 6 in 10 citizens said violence after 2024 Election Day is “very likely” or “somewhat likely.”
