The United States has presented a controversial peace plan that includes recognizing Crimea as Russian territory and lifting sanctions on Moscow in exchange for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The proposal, which favors U.S. interests and pressures Kyiv, has generated tensions in Europe and criticism from sectors who denounce it as an imposed and unequal solution.

The U.S. government, under the administration of Donald Trump, has put forward a seven-point proposal for a peace agreement in Ukraine. The plan, discussed in meetings in Paris and expected to be presented in London, includes the formal recognition of Crimea as part of the Russian Federation, the lifting of sanctions against Moscow, and the demand that Ukraine renounce joining NATO. This initiative comes at a time of military exhaustion for Kyiv and growing international pressure to end the conflict.
A Plan That Favors U.S. and Demands Historic Concessions from Kyiv
The US proposal, described as a “final offer” and presented to Ukrainian officials in Paris, requires Ukraine to accept the loss of Crimea and, de facto, other regions occupied by Russia since 2022. In exchange, Moscow would halt hostilities along the current front and economic and energy relations between Washington and the Kremlin would be reactivated.
US Vice President J.D. Vance has warned that Washington will withdraw from negotiations if Kyiv does not accept the agreement, increasing pressure on President Zelensky’s government. The Trump administration seeks to close the conflict before the US elections, even at the expense of the principles of sovereignty and self-determination for the Ukrainian people. The threat to abandon the peace process reveals the power asymmetry and Washington’s unwillingness to support a negotiated solution that respects Ukraine’s rights.

Ukrainian Rejection and European Resistance
President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government has reiterated that giving up Crimea would be unconstitutional and that the Ukrainian people will not accept “a frozen conflict disguised as peace.” Furthermore, the US proposal has caused unease in European capitals, with France, Germany, and the UK postponing their participation in the London meeting for fear of a diplomatic crisis with NATO and the EU.
From progressive sectors and left-wing media, the US plan is denounced as an “imposed peace” that sacrifices Ukraine’s self-determination for geopolitical stability and Western energy interests. The proposal ignores the root causes of the conflict , setting a dangerous international precedent. Moreover, there is criticism over the lack of real mechanisms to guarantee Ukraine’s security and reconstruction, beyond vague promises of aid and guarantees.
In conclusion, the US proposal to recognize Crimea as Russian and force a deal in Ukraine reflects the logic of the powerful and raises serious doubts about the viability of genuine and lasting peace in the region. History will judge whether this agreement was the beginning of a new era of stability or a setback in the struggle for justice and the sovereignty of peoples.
