The war-driven agenda of the U.S. government has no place in the Essequibo region.

On Tuesday, Venezuela rejected the military actions jointly conducted by the United States Southern Command (SouthCom) and Guyana, describing them as threats to peace in Latin America and the Caribbean. Below is the statement issued by the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Ministry:

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela categorically and forcefully rejects the recent joint actions between the U.S. Southern Command and the Government of Guyana, which undermine regional stability, violate the principles of international law, and constitute a threat to regional peace, contradicting the spirit of the 1966 Geneva Agreement.

The establishment of military facilities by the U.S. Southcom in Guyana, including the military use of the Brigadier Gary Beaton Aerodrome located in the Essequibo region, is unacceptable and represents a new provocation by the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, undermining the spirit of peace that guided the Argyle Agreement, signed with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Venezuela considers that the U.S. administration’s war-driven agenda has no place in our America, particularly in the territory of the Essequibo region. The unacceptable expansion of naval and airport stations for military purposes demonstrates efforts to hinder a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the territorial dispute, infringing upon our country’s legitimate historical rights over the Essequibo region.

The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela, within the framework of recognizing Latin America and the Caribbean as a Peace Zone, reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes. In this regard, we call on Guyana to immediately cease these actions, which are contrary to mutual understanding and international legal frameworks.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reaffirms its determination to defend, based on the mandate given by the people in the December 3, 2023, referendum, the Venezuelan people’s sovereign rights over the Essequibo region through peaceful and diplomatic means, as it has historically done. No unilateral or external action will undermine our determination to preserve the territorial integrity and dignity of our nation.”
