According to Liz Perlman, executive director of AFSCME, negotiations took place with the university management, but the trade unionist says that they stalled. He further stated that the University of California is negotiating “in bad faith”.
In response to the obstruction by UC, Perlman said he made a formal complaint to the California State Board of Public Labor Relations, denouncing the untenable situation.
“We have people who get public assistance and sleep in their cars, and instead of addressing that in a meaningful way, the university is actually creating an even greater gap by adding proposals around massive cuts to our health care,” Perlman.
He also noted that 70% of university service employees cannot afford an apartment near campuses, many of them located in urban areas.
On the UC side, Heather Hansen, a spokesman for the presidential office, denied the accusations while accusing the unions of stalling negotiations.
AFSCME is the largest employee union within the University of California system and represents more than 30,000 workers. The strike will affect all 10 UC campuses and five medical centers located in the same high school.
