On Wednesday, Ukrainian forces launched a missile strike with Western high-precision weapons on the Taganrog military airfield in Russia’s Rostov region.

Six U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles were used. Two of them were shot down and the rest were deflected by Russian electronic warfare systems. Falling missile fragments caused casualties among the personnel.

“This attack by Western long-range weapons will not go unanswered, and appropriate measures will be taken,” the Russian Defense Ministry stated.

In a major shift of policy on the Ukraine crisis, the United States in November authorized Ukraine to use U.S. long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia’s territory. Russia has repeatedly called it an escalation of tension around the conflict.

On Wednesday night, Russian air defenses shot down 16 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Kursk, Chechnya, North Ossetia and the Crimean peninsula. Four drones were destroyed over the Kursk border region, part of which has been occupied by Ukrainian troops since last August.

Ukrainian drones attacked two Russian republics in the North Caucasus: Chechnya, where one drone was shot down, and North Ossetia, where anti-aircraft batteries shot down three drones.

“There were no casualties or destruction,” said the head of North Ossetia, Sergei Menialo, who specified that the Ukrainian attack focused on the Mozdok region, which houses an air base. Another eight drones were neutralized over the territory of the Crimean peninsula.
