On 25 November, John Kirby, National Security Communications Advisor at the White House, confirmed that Ukraine is authorized to use ATACMS long-range missiles to attack targets in the Russian region of Kursk.
In his statement, Kirby indicated that this decision responds to the immediate defensive needs of Ukraine and that operations are currently being conducted in and around Kursk.
The authorization generated a rapid reaction from the Russian authorities. Vyacheslav Volodin, president of the State Duma (the Russian parliament), interpreted the move as further evidence of NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict against Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that the supply of arms by the West to Ukraine only prolongs the conflict and does not contribute to a peaceful solution. It has further stated that foreign armed convoys would be considered “legitimate targets” for its army crossing the border.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also commented that attacks with Western weapons on Russian territory have transformed the conflict in Ukraine, which was previously originated by the West, into a matter of “global character,” pointing out that the use of such weapons requires specialists from the manufacturing countries.
Despite these Russian warnings, the U.S. reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting Ukraine militarily. The U.S. government has indicated its intention to continue sending arms packages and working to speed up their distribution.
