The UK and the U.S. continue to present their support for the war against Russia as a matter of ‘global security’.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal said his country hopes to receive permission from London to use British long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

“I have stressed that we are waiting for permission from the United Kingdom to attack military targets on enemy territory with long-range weapons,” he said after meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who is on an official visit with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the Ukrainian capital.

This unprecedented joint visit comes amid a diplomatic offensive by Ukraine to get its main partners to lift restrictions that prevent it from attacking with missiles such as the British Storm Shadow or the American ATACMS inside Russian territory.

In an open letter to Blinken and Lammy, seventeen U.S. generals, diplomats and personalities have asked them to remove limitations that they impose on Ukraine in the use of their weapons. Shmigal also discussed with Lammy the provision of additional air defence systems by the UK.

During his visit to the Ukrainian capital, Lammy announced 710 million euros in aid to Ukraine. This amount includes 321 million euros that had already been announced for reconstruction projects and to cover immediate humanitarian and energy needs.

Ukraine will also receive some 439 million euros in guarantees for World Bank loans before the end of the year, which will allow it to pay civil servants and pensioners and cover the costs of schools and hospitals.

Since the start of the Russian special military operation in February 2022, the United Kingdom has provided 822 million euros in non-military bilateral support, along with 2.3 billion euros in loan guarantees, which will increase to 5 billion euros in 2027.

“Together with the U.S., we are committed to giving Ukraine what it needs to resist,” said Lammy, for whom the fight in Ukraine is “a fight for British security, European security, and global security.”
