The Kyiv regime does not relent in its provocations aimed at creating a threat of catastrophe at the plant.

On Monday morning, the Russian Defense Ministry informed that its air defenses had shot down five Ukrainian drones that attempted to attack the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.

“The Kyiv regime does not relent in its provocations aimed at creating a threat of technological catastrophe at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” the Russian command stated.

“On January 5, the Ukrainian army once again attempted to attack the nuclear power plant and the city of Enerhodar with eight fixed-wing drones. Air defense systems destroyed all the drones,” it added.

One of the drones that was shot down caused a fire on the roof of the training center at the Zaporizhzhia plant. However, there were no casualties or significant damage, and the radiological situation remains normal.

On Sunday night, observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported hearing strong explosions near the nuclear plant. They also reported hearing machine gun fire coming from the area.

“This poses another threat to the nuclear safety of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. An attack on any nuclear facility is completely unacceptable,” declared IAEA Director Rafael Grossi.

In light of the increased military activity around the plant, Grossi called for “maximum restraint” to prevent the “clear danger” to the plant’s safety.
