UN Calls for Urgent Resources To Increase Humanitarian AID in Sudan

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the conflict has increased the number of displaced persons since mid-April 2023 to more than 10.3 million people.
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan called for urgent resources and unrestricted access to expand humanitarian response in the African country.

Sudan is mired in a deep crisis of famine, floods, cholera outbreaks and thousands of displaced people amid the conflict between the army and paramilitaries forces.
“We need an urgent injection of funds for the relief operation, as well as safe and unhindered humanitarian access, including across borders and battle lines,” said Nkweta-Salami in a communiquĂ© from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The humanitarian coordinator said that it is necessary “to silence the weapons so that humanitarian workers can reach people in need” and stressed that “Humanitarian workers on the ground ready to expand their work and move forward on multiple fronts.”
Nkweta-Salami added that humanitarian workers welcomed the reopening of the Adre crossing connecting Sudan with Chad and that the Sudanese government announced in mid-August for a three-month period in response to a UN request to allow humanitarian aid to enter.
On the other hand, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed visited the Adre Pass last Friday to monitor the flow of aid from Chad into Sudan, where she reiterated the need for a ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the armed group Rapid Support Forces.
