Adam Abdelmoula, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, said in a statement that “recent rumors suggesting that the United Nations is evacuating all staff from Syria are false.” At the time he indicated that UN remains steadfast in “its commitment to stay and deliver life-saving assistance to the people of Syria during this critical time.”

In this regard, the UN coordinator called on the parties to the conflict “to maintain their obligations under international humanitarian law” and recalled that “Civilians must be protected and humanitarian workers must be allowed to carry out their missions without obstruction”.

“The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Hostilities have displaced over 370,000 individuals, with many seeking refuge in the northeast and others trapped in front-line areas, unable to escape. Civilian casualties, including women and children, continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian action,” the UN top official in Syria said.

Abdelmoula also called to “all parties” to to fulfil its obligations under international humanitarian law, highlighting that civilians need to be protected and humanitarian personnel must be allowed to carry out their mission without hindrance and “Safe and unhindered access to those in need is a fundamental requirement.”

On the other hand, UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, urged “the start of a process that leads to the realisation of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people,” he said that he had just met the ministers of Iran, Russia and Türkiye together, and had consultations with representatives from the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany and the European Union.

Speaking to reporters in Doha, Qatar, last Saturday, Pedersen reiterated the call for de-escalation, for calm, to prevent bloodshed and protect civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law and called for “urgent political talks in Geneva to implement Security Council resolution 2254,”
