This initiative will enable civilians in Gaza to immediately access basic services and humanitarian aid, rejecting any deliberate attempts to subject the Palestinian people to hunger and other deprivations.
The first resolution, which supports the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), received overwhelming backing from 159 countries, with only nine votes against and 11 abstentions.
The second resolution called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, garnering support from 158 countries, also facing nine objections and 13 abstentions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Palestine expressed deep gratitude to the countries that sponsored and voted in favor of these resolutions, highlighting their alignment with the UN Charter and principles of justice, human rights, and international law.
The ministry emphasized that renewed support for UNRWA sends a clear message about the importance of continuing its vital role in providing basic services to Palestinian refugees and protecting their legitimate rights, which is essential for regional stability.
In relation to the call for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, the ministry underscored that this position reflects the international community’s will to end the humanitarian catastrophe and genocide resulting from ongoing Israeli aggression and policies of siege and starvation. Furthermore, it highlighted the urgent need to implement Security Council Resolution No. 2735 of 2024, which stipulates an immediate ceasefire and calls on the UN Secretary-General to establish new accountability mechanisms.
The ministry urged UN member states to ensure effective implementation of these resolutions on the ground by facilitating unrestricted access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, ensuring protection for civilians, and holding accountable those who violate international law.
In response, Hamas welcomed the General Assembly’s adoption of the ceasefire resolution. In a statement, Hamas reaffirmed its readiness to support any decision aimed at halting hostilities throughout all stages of the conflict.
This development marks a crucial step towards addressing the dire situation in Gaza and underscores global commitment to upholding Palestinian rights amidst ongoing challenges.
