Riyad Masnour referred to the inhuman practices against Palestinians, including the ongoing genocidal Israeli war in the Gaza Strip.

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) held an emergency special session on Tuesday to vote on a draft resolution submitted by Palestine, and endorsed by more than 40 countries, demanding the end of the Israeli occupation within one year.

The text is based on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on Israel’s practices implemented for decades against the Palestinians and their illegal presence in these territories.

In the draft resolution, the people and leaders formally demand an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories within 12 months.

“The General Assembly demands that Israel cease without delay its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, which constitutes a continuing unlawful act entailing its international responsibility, and to do so no later than 12 months after the adoption of this resolution”, states the text.

In presenting the project, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Masnour stressed that “the draft resolution “focuses on the obligations of Israel, all States and the United Nations and other international organizations under international law. It also calls for a series of individual and collective actions to enforce the law and implement relevant United Nations resolutions on the question of Palestine”.

Masnour stressed that “it is time for the General Assembly to fulfil its mandate and for all states to fulfil their own obligations to ensure that Israel fulfils theirs in the face of its flagrant non-compliance and its relentless violations”.

He also stated that “the Court’s advisory opinion showed that there is no doubt about the facts or the law. But the law is not there simply to serve as a yardstick for violations. It is there to prevent those violations, and when that doesn’t work, it’s there to punish them, to put an end to them, to ensure accountability, to guarantee justice”.

He also denounced the abuses perpetrated by the Zionist entity and stated that “the solution is before our eyes, it is the one supported by the international community as a whole and it is enshrined in numerous UN resolutions. It is an independent and sovereign State of Palestine with the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side in peace and security with Israel”.
